Exploring New Paths: Reflections on What I Learned This Year

The three years I spent at Auckland Council as a resource consent planner brought both challenges and rewards. This February, however, marked a turning point as I decided to broaden my expertise and explore different aspects of planning. The experiences gained so far at Brighta Consulting have been invaluable, offering insights into various facets of urban planning previously unexplored.

Mastering the Masterplan

A standout project this year has been working on a masterplan initiative. Despite having an urban design degree, the nature of resource consent work often limited my ability to apply my learning in this area. The masterplan project provided a refreshing departure from what I used to do, letting me actively engage with urban design principles and community involvement. This journey not only expanded my skill set but also reignited my passion for creating spaces that resonate with the community.

The Intersection of Policy and Planning

Venturing into the policy side of planning initially sparked both curiosity and apprehension. Realising that great plans don't always smoothly transition into action has been enlightening and, at times, frustrating. Unlike the immediate outcomes of processing consents, policy planning demands a more contemplative approach. Working on policy projects gave me a unique perspective, emphasising the importance of aligning vision with practical implementation. This shift in focus has brought about a welcome change, offering a deeper understanding of the intricate dynamics involved in shaping the planning landscape. Although results may not be immediate, the process of shaping medium and long-term goals has been a fulfilling journey.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on the year, the lessons learned, and the unexpected enjoyment found in policy planning fuel my anticipation for the coming year. I look forward to contributing to impactful projects that blend the insights of resource consent planning with the strategic foresight of policy development. These experiences have not only enriched my professional journey but have also opened doors to new possibilities and a deeper appreciation for the multifaceted world of urban planning. I am excited for the challenges and accomplishments that lie ahead.
